Paper Types For Printing Projects

One thing we often don’t take into consideration when reading a book, looking at brochures, business cards, flyers, postcards, or even envelopes, is the quality of paper. Unless it is an extremely textured and fabric-like paper, like column paper, we rarely notice it is any different.

Surprisingly there are a lot of factors that go into paper. Everything from weight to brightness need to be considered when companies and business professionals are choosing paper for their newsletters or envelopes.

Quality

The quality of the paper you use for your business project can greatly affect the way it is viewed and absorbed. If you print a sales sheet on the lowest quality of paper, it could ruin your overall message. Printing a flyer on the highest quality of paper is also unnecessary. Finding the perfect paper quality for your project may be difficult, but the House of Printing experts can help you find the right one for you.

Paper quality is measured by numbers, with Number 1 being the best and Number 5 being the lowest quality. With only five numbers of quality, you may think that the difference in paper can’t be that big, but it is. A Number 5 paper is newsprint—grainy, dull, rough, and unattractive for professional business projects, unless that rugged look is what you are going for. A Number 1 quality paper would be a fine arts poster. These two paper quality are on complete opposite sides of the spectrum, giving you an idea of the huge difference in paper quality. We generally print on a Number 2 paper quality, but if you are looking for something else, let us know and we can do that for you.

Texture

Paper texture is not something we generally think about or notice. Unless, as stated before, it is an extremely textured paper. Most projects are printed on smoother textures of paper but some printing project require something unique and eye catching.

Some of the most common textures include linen, tant, nouveau, silk, particles, vintage, and laid. Tant and linen are heavily textured, and feel a bit more fabric-like than other papers. To find the right paper for your company’s printing project, let us help!

Finish

Brochures, posters, and flyers are generally printed on paper with a more glossy finish. Text-heavy printing projects are often printed on a matte finished paper. Glossy paper allows for more vibrant and bright colors, which is good for projects using a lot of color and images. This finish offers an upscale finish for a high-quality look. If your printing project is mainly full of text and information, a matte finish is the better option for you.

Color

We have all seen bright white paper and we have see paper that has a beige tint to it. While color doesn’t seem like an important aspect when it comes to paper, it really can be. Off-white paper can be viewed as higher quality and more professional, but whatever your project is, we can help you find the right paper color for you.

These are only a few aspects that go into paper. Who knew there were so many factors to consider when it came to something as simple as paper?
